I would like to know if you were to give just one piece of advice what would it be? Mine would be patience-both before and after the surgery. I look forward to hearing your replies. I would like to add, ask the patient often if there is "something" you can do for them, (i.e. fix meals, clean, go to the movie store, hold their hand or just spend time with them). She needs to let you know her feelings about having this procedure...before and after Go with your wife/partner to all her doctors appts. Try not to sound selfish when asking about how this will affect your sex life, but do ask and share your fears if you have any. Do not expect your wife to do any house cleaning or cooking for 6 weeks after her surgery. If you do not think you are up for the challenge, ask her if it would be ok for you to arrange to have a cleaning company clean the home once a week for six weeks. If coworkers ask if you need any help while your wife is recovering say YES. If you are not much of a cook, I am sure your wife/family would appreciate a home cooked meal once in awhile. Don't forget to do the laundry. If you have children, enlist them to help take over Mom's duties. Ask your wife what sort of things she does for the kids, like laundry, fixing lunches etc...and if you need instruction on how to do these things ask her to write down the instructions so you can refer to them while she is recovering. buy her a couple nice pairs of pajamas to wear while recovering at home. She will be in her jammies for two weeks after surgery so unless you want to be doing laundry every day you may want to make sure she has a few nice sets. Fuzzy slippers or a robe would be nice too. Along with all the great previous advice I would add that the husband/partner know whats going on. Attend the drs appointments, read the material they give you, listen to the drs advice on options and/or instructions, and know the risks. LISTEN to your partner. The outcome may be the end of pain and intolerable circumstances, the end of bearing children, or a combination of those things and more, just listen.

My advice, is love the kids a little more, spend extra time with them, and reassure them that Mom is going to be ok, she's just struggling. Most kids are used to seeing Mom in control, not on the couch...sad... Kids often act up if they are scared and don't know how to express it... Actually sat on my sons bed last night and had a chat. I put him to bed every night before my surgery. I'm limited to the amount of times I can climb the stairs a day, but last night, I went to bed when he did. Anyway, I said... I know I'm struggling, but things will be ok and I'll get back to normal. I can't wait to do something fun! So, we talked about what we could do, when I got to feeling better. He's 10 and it seemed to really reassure him. Thanks again! I would add that once you get home, you need as much, if not more assistance in the area of "care". And yes, if you have teenagers,they should be willing to cut back on social engagements, just for a short time. While my husband was excellent up to my surgery and aces the 2 1/2 days I was in the hospital,he seems to have disappeared once we've gotten home. (OK, he owns his own business and has to get back to it but I haven't seen him all day and it's 12:45 am here! At least my dog "gets it"! LOL)
